What are Cat Worms?

Cat Worms are a condition in which a feline becomes infected with one or more of many different types of worms. These worms attach themselves to either the cats stomach lining, or intestinal wall. The worms will then consume a great deal of the cats food, robbing it of vital nutrients.

What Kind of Cats can Become Infected with Worms?

Unfortunately any kind of cat can become infected with worms, although statistically outdoor cats are more likely to become infected. If your cat has ever had fleas, there is also a good chance of infection as well. Realistically newborn kittens can only become infected via their mother, however if the newborn does become infected they require special treatment. Failure to do so may prove fatal to your cat.

How does a Cat Become Infected with Worms?

A cat can become infected with worms in a variety of ways. In the case of kittens, if the mother is infected there also is a high chance that the kittens themselves will be born infected with worms. In the case of tapeworms, as recent flea infestation can result in an infection. Likewise, ingesting worm eggs via plants, rodents, insects, feces, and even soil are all ways in which a cat may become infected.

Are Cat Worms Fatal?

Realistically, the chances of an adult cat dying from a worm infection is unlikely, however not unheard of. Hookworms seem to have the highest mortality rate, if left untreated in a cat. Kittens, however, are vulnerable to all different kinds of worms. Since a worm infestation results in a lack of nutrients for the host, a cat may die from malnutrition as a secondary symptom.

How Can I Prevent my Cat from Getting Worms?

Although it is near impossible to completely prevent your cat from getting worms, there are several things you can do to help their odds. Regular worming is the single best thing you can do to prevent worms. Keeping your cats litter tray as clean as possible also helps. If there are worm scares in your area, be cautious letting your cat outside. You should also discourage your cat from ingesting caught rodents and insects.

Can Cat Worms be Treated?

All known types of worm infestations can be treated, although the technique may vary from type to type. The key is proper and efficient treatment. The average dewormer needs to be used two to three times over several weeks in order to completely cure a cat.
